Deckbuilding: How to Create Your Warband
Warbands are the meat and potatoes of Malediction as they provide you with units, spells, and equipment necessary for conquering your opponent!
So let’s go over some things that will aid in your success on the battlefield, shall we?
Echo – This is your resource used to deploy any units, equipment, or cast spells you may have in hand. For you, TCG or RPG fans, think of this as your mana. Without echo, you’ll be unable to deploy new units, equip new items, or cast those devastating spells!
Units – These are your creatures, soldiers, constructs…you name it! Each unit will have with it an echo cost that needs to be spent in order to deploy them. Be careful to read the text on a unit’s card, as every unit also comes with its own set of abilities. Need more information? Make sure to check out the rulebook!
Spells – They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Well, the heart can’t grow if you blast it into oblivion with one of your spells! These are cards that allow you to cast all kinds of spells at the cost of echo. There are 2 subtypes of spells as well. More specifics for these can be found in the rulebook.
Attachments – While a unit may be strong in its own right, an attachment card can really make a unit a force to be reckoned with. These cards can be attached to units and will provide an extra bonus. More specifics for these can be found in the rulebook.
When building your warband, there are a few crucial rules one must follow to be capable of handling all that the Malediction throws at them.
This and much more, specific to deck composition, can be found in the rulebook.
- Seeker Card – In order to lead your warband into battle, you need to choose 1 Seeker. Each Seeker will also come with their own legacy, which is tied specifically to them and will dictate how much starting echo you begin battle with. Your Seeker will determine what faction-aligned cards you can include in your deck, based on the sigils shown on their card.
- Legacy Card – This card is tied specifically to the Seeker you choose to lead your warband. Every legacy has with it a starting echo amount that determines how much echo a player will start with and other bonuses tied to it that will affect your entire warband as well.
- Terrain Card – Each deck must contain 1 terrain card. While factions will have terrain that seems to favor them more than others, you are not restricted to using that specific terrain. Any warband can include any 1 terrain card to use in battle. Want to play a Thundersteps-led warband with the Astarian Pathways? No problem!
- Minimum/Maximum Deck Size – The minimum number of cards that must be within your warband is 30, and the maximum amount is 50. This number does NOT include the Seeker, Legacy, and Terrain cards, as those are separate from your warband deck and do not count towards it.
- Side Deck – This is an optional set of cards geared towards allowing some diversity by allowing you to swap between this deck and your main deck between matches. It consists of 7 cards total and is set aside from your main deck.
- Units – While there is no required number of units to include in your deck, a general rule of thumb is anywhere between 13-17 units as a good starting point.
- Spells – Similar to unit cards, there is no limit as to how many spells you can include in your deck. Most people have around the same number of spells as units in their decks, give or take some. The same rules apply as well for spell card ranks and faction alignment, as you can only contain faction-aligned cards and so many copies of them in a deck.
- Attachments – As mentioned above, these cards can attach to units to provide a little extra “oomph!” behind them. Just like every other card in Malediction, there are some restrictions on these based on the number of copies in a deck, based on the rank.
In addition to the above, please ensure you check the rulebook for further information and details when creating your warband.”
